Two of Pakistan’s seasoned T20 campaigners, Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, have officially joined the Northern Superchargers squad for The Hundred 2025. Their inclusion comes as part of the replacement draft, offering a timely boost to the franchise ahead of the new season.
First Pakistani Signings for This Year’s Tournament
The duo’s signing marks the first confirmed participation of Pakistani players in this year’s edition of The Hundred. Earlier concerns had surfaced when no Pakistani cricketers were selected during the main draft—a development that drew attention due to the growing influence of Indian investors in the league. With four of the eight franchises under Indian ownership or co-management, questions around geopolitics and player selection were widely discussed.
Amir has been brought in as a full-season replacement for Australian pacer Ben Dwarshuis, while Imad will briefly fill in for New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner from August 7 to 10. Both bring with them extensive T20 experience and familiarity with the tournament format, having played in global leagues even after stepping away from the national side.
A Shift in the Narrative
While off-field dynamics have shaped perceptions, cricketing logistics also played a role in the limited Pakistani presence. The national team’s packed white-ball calendar—including tours to the West Indies and UAE—created availability issues. Last season’s late withdrawals by Pakistani players further dampened franchise interest.
However, the Superchargers’ decision to sign Amir and Imad signals a potential shift. Their inclusion could pave the way for more Pakistani representation in future editions—particularly if scheduling allows for greater availability.
For the Northern Superchargers, the duo adds depth, versatility, and leadership. For Pakistani fans, it’s a reassuring moment: two of the country’s most prominent short-format players are once again on the global stage—not just filling spots, but contributing meaningfully.
